The tree, the bird and the axe
There once was a tiny yellow bird, who decided to rest on the branches of a tall, sturdy tree. It’s a beautiful tree, standing in pride amongst the other trees.
“I choose to nest here, and guard this tree with my life. The other trees only make me sad to live in. Hereby, will I be your guardian forever.”
And so, days passed by, in which the bird and the tree co-exist happily. The tree’s company helped erased the painful memories in the bird, from a distant forest. Its chipped wings have slowly restored under the shelter provided by the tree and day by day, the yellow bird grows stronger with the tree’s company. The bird has also met many other animals in the forest which it became friends with; through the tree, the bird became acquainted with the squirrels, other birds, the monkeys, and slowly, became welcomed into the big family in the forest.
One day, when the bird returned from its worm search, it heard loud noises coming in the direction of the ground, the whole tree was shaking violently. It looked down and saw a scene that it could not believe; the bird saw the tree sawing itself up into halves with a motor axe. Gripping the axe by its branch, it cuts itself as it releases squeals of pain.
“Stop it! Stop it! What are you doing? Why are you doing this?” exclaimed the yellow bird.
The injured tree gave a gentle yet sorrowful reply, “I need to cut myself up, because inside me, I’m rotting and dying.” The tree added, “ You see these woodpecker on my branch lately? They have been pecking on the pests that I’ve been infested with.”
The yellow bird listened in disbelief. This strong tree which had given it shelter, solace, warmth and hope, is collapsing before its eyes.
“You cant leave and collapse! You’re all I’ve been believing in, since I came over from the other town which had caused me so much pain. I need to believe in you! Don’t do it anymore please!” the bird pleaded with teary eyes.
The tree replied in all solemnest, “Let me let go, little bird. If I chop myself up now, I can still grow again healthily. I’m doing this to save my halves. I need to be logged, and rejuvenate again. Even if I end up being separated into two different trees, at least the two tiny trees can continue to grow well and flourish.”
The tree sighed and continued, “And you, my little bird friend, you need to stop holding yourself so attached to me. I am but a rotting tree, you need to stop nesting on me. I have sheltered you long enough from your pain in the previous town. You need to grow independent and stop relying on me and on any trees. Learn to fly like you should, and need to. Stop looking at the wound on your wings and your chest, it has long healed, get on with life, while I attempt to grow and flourish again.
"NO! Stop it! I can't do it and you're hurting me too! Please dont go like that! I can't take it when u are killing yourself here. It hurts me so much to see you in such a state. Please stop it!" The bird cried in desperation.
"You have to, it has to come", replied the tree.
"No, I can't!! I really can't!" the bird cried in resistance.
"But you have to; you have to- You have no choice", the tree calmly said.
The bird listened with tears rolling onto its beak. The tree is right. It is doing the right thing, and what it said is true. The tree must grow strong and stop the pests from growing on it, and the bird must find the strength too, to seek new grounds and make its home in other parts in the forest.
“You will grow well, and I will visit you often. I will company you and watch over you as before, as you grow again strong to become the two strongest and healthiest trees in this forest”, the bird said, as it reluctantly bidded farewell to the tree.
“Goodbye! farewell, its not the end. I will see you often. I thank you for your shelter. My mentor, my tree.” The little yellow bird yelled as it flew southwards to find its new home. It tried its best to sound chirpy in its blessings, but the blessings could not contain the bird's pain.
“Farewell, its not the end, but the beginning of a new chapter in our lives”, the tree replied with sorrowful tears, as it waved its branch and leaves to the little yellow bird.
